France and the UK taking bigger risks to aid Ukraine

On May 2 the President of France said that his country might send troops to Ukraine if Russia broke through Ukrainian lines and Kyiv requested such help. Since early 2024 President Macron has mooted the possibility of Western troops in Ukraine. But most NATO countries said they will never deploy troops to Ukraine. Macron said that Russia was a mortal peril for Europe. He said France is determined that Russia shall not prevail in Ukraine. If Ukraine falls then other countries will be invaded by Russia, he said. Note that Macron did not promise to send troops in the event of a Russian breakthrough. He said France ''might'' do so.  Macron said Russia spends a third of its money on the war and this will become unaffordable. But even if he is correct Russia might win the war before the money runs out. Macron is about to host the President of China. China is Russia's main trade partner and vital to Russia for selling components for military technology. Macron says the war is not in China's interests so China could be persuaded to convince the Russians to end the war. This optimism seems misplaced. There is no sign that Beijing has ever asked Russia to end the war. Hungary rebuked Macron saying that French troops in Ukraine could lead to a third world war. It is believed Russia is about to launch a summer offensive. The weather is favorable. Russia is intensely attacking key points in eastern and southern Ukraine. Russia keeps announcing it has taken a new village every few days. Russia is keen to gain ground before the US aid package weapons arrive in serious numbers because this will slow Russia's advance.
