Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan tell their people: do not go to Russia

On May 2 Kyrgyzstan made the announcement. Tajikistan did so on April 28, 2024. This is in the wake of the Crocus City Hall terrorist attack that killed 144 people. 11 Tajik men face trial for this.  Central Asians who go to Russia face intense questioning at border control and having their luggage inspected. There has been an upsurge in xenophobia against Central Asians. The President of Tajikistan phoned Putin on May 3 to discuss guest workers. The Kremlin's statement about Putin's phone call with the Tajik President said that Putin would like to see the labor migration situation normalized. Tajikistan is the poorest former Soviet republic. Remittances from Tajiks working in Russia are crucial for the Tajik economy. President Rahmon also assured Russia that Tajikistan will be fully cooperative in battling terrorism. The Tajik government protested to Russia about the treatment of Tajiks in Russia since the Crocus City Hall attacks. Tajikistan cannot afford to offend Russia. Tajikistan has only made this protest because it has been exasperated by severe harassment of thousands of Tajiks in Russia. Over 1,000 Tajiks are stranded in Moscow airports, not allowed to enter the country. They have been there for days in some cases. They are reluctant to fly back to Tajikistan. A flight from Tajikistan to Moscow costs at least USD 200. That is a month's salary for most Tajiks.  Ober 5% of workers in Russia are Central Asian guest workers. Russia needs them acutely in construction, agriculture and sanitation where they are more like 10% of the workforce.  With a falling birth rate, more emigration and men being drafted into the military, Russia's labor force will decline dramat...
