2.5 million Ukrainian refugees causing strain in Europe

Since February 24 over 2.5 million Ukrainians have fled the country. This figure is only going to grow as the Russian Army penetrates deeper into Ukraine. There are other Ukrainians who are displaced within Ukraine.Ukraine has a population of 42 million. Some of them are pro-Russian and will not go to the EU. Some will stay to fight. But the potential number of refugees is well over 10 million.Over half the Ukrainian refugees are in Poland. Poland is saying it is struggling to cope with the numbers, and at least several thousand more arrive daily. All EU countries have vowed to take some Ukrainians. Ireland has taken over 2,000.Moldova is the poorest country in Europe and not an EU member. It has 120,000 Ukrainian refugees and a population of only 4 million. The US has pledged financial support for Moldova in handling the refugee crisis.The United Kingdom (not an EU member) has also taken in over 1,000 refugees. 44,000 Britons have offered to house Ukrainians. Some Europeans are already grumbling about Ukrainian refugees. This is what Putin is counting on. Eventually public opinion will turn against Ukrainians and the EU will seek a deal that enables Ukrainians to go home.
