200,000 foreigners seek Kazakh ID numbers

On October 26 it was announced by the Kazakh government that these foreign citizens are seeking a Kazakh ID so they can open bank accounts, ever since September 21, when Russia called up to 300,000 draftees. Most of the 200,000 are Russians and Belarusians. Kazakhstan has a very long border, and many Russians have gone there. Most have stayed but some have passed through to Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, which have a lower cost of living. 600 Russian citizens of Kazakh ethnicity have come to Kazakhstan to claim residency. Russians can stay up to 90 days per year in Kazakhstan without a residence permit. Thus far Kazakhstan has been welcoming, and many companies have relocated from Russia to Kazakhstan. Some Kazakhs are wary of the influx of Russians. Some Russians say that a portion of Kazakh land should belong to Russia. 20% of Kazakh citizens are ethnically Russian. However, Russian-Kazakhs are seldom promoted in the military or the intelligence services because they are not entirely trusted.
