21 Russian cities cancel Victory Day Parade

On May 5 cities had made the announcement. Some of them announced this several days before. Most of these cities are close to the Ukrainian frontier. However, some of them are even in Siberia. Tyumen in Siberia said it made the decision on security grounds. An ulterior reason could be that not enough soldiers and vehicles are available for parades. Russia says it has suffered several Ukrainian drone attacks over the past few days. There are no-fly zones for drones in Moscow and St Petersburg now.  On May 4 Putin's spokesman said the drone attack on the Kremlin was approved of by US.  The main victory parade takes place in Moscow on May 9. Usually over 10,000 troops and dozens of vehicles take part. In 2022 it was scaled back considerably. Usually the Immortal Regiment marches. These are ordinary citizens carrying portraits of relatives who fought in World War II or subsequent wars. This had been cancelled for security reasons but perhaps because there would be too many people carrying portraits of those killed in the Ukraine War.
