A day of hope for Israelis and Palestinians, as Trump announces Gaza ceasefire: Analysis and implications

Overnight, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas have signed the first phase of his Gaza peace plan, including an agreement for a ceasefire, the release of all hostages, a large-scale release of Palestinian prisoners, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces to an agreed line. According to Trump, this marks the first step toward a “strong, stable, and lasting peace”. The ceasefire formally took effect at 12:00 noon (05:00 a.m. ET), while the agreement was scheduled for approval by the Israeli cabinet at 17:00 (10:00 a.m. ET). Following the approval, two countdowns began: 24 hours for the IDF’s withdrawal to the designated “yellow line”, and 72 hours for the phased release of all hostages. Assessing the deal In assessing the agreement that was reached, it can be said that the U.S. mediation team succeeded in brokering a deal to the finish: Both sides can claim they got what they wanted, both can boast a win, and both remain far from having achieved everything they sought. Credit is due to President Trump’s team. The Israeli government under Benjamin Netanyahu achieved the release of all living hostages (and some of the bodies) without a full withdrawal from the Strip. The IDF will continue to control roughly 53% of Gaza’s territory, including a sufficiently broad buffer zone to prevent Hamas militants from reaching the border. Hamas, on the other hand, secured a halt to the fighting and likely obtained international guarantees that Israel will not attack the Strip again while negotiations on the later phases of the Trump deal continue.
