A month of good news for the PRM government, and of misfortune for the PLD

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - Report 07 Dec 2020 by Magdalena Lizardo

The actions carried out by the Attorney General’s office during the last weekend in November ended the waiting period for the submission to justice of the alleged corrupt officials and close associates of the administration of former president Danilo Medina Sánchez. Ten people were arrested during the so-called Anti-Octopus operation, including a brother and sister of the ex-president, and a former minister of health.

For the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), these actions by the Attorney General's office were the last straw in a month-long bad streak, characterized by the departure of mid-level leaders and party members who left for the People's Force (FP), the new organization founded by former president Leonel Fernandez after his departure from the PLD. In November, the Senate declared that the FP was the second largest party, replacing the PLD.

These actions are occurring after President Luis Abinader has passed his first 100 days, with his administration enjoying the support of 70% of the population, according to the latest Gallup poll.

On the economic front recovery continues, with accumulated growth of the economic activity index of -7.7% in January-October 2020, lower than the accumulated decrease in January-September 2020 of -8.1%, compared to the same periods in 2019. Annualized inflation exceeded the target range of 5% for the second consecutive month.

Congress finally approved the 2021 budget, and the government faces pressure from the public and important sectors demanding that the social programs established to protect the population affected by the pandemic be maintained beyond December 2020. The government has stated that it will evaluate the situation. These programs have been key to reducing the impact of the pandemic on the poor.

Congress authorized the extension of the state of emergency, to contain the COVID-19 outbreak, over which the average number of cases detected daily has increased over the last two weeks.
