A New Decline in Industrial Production

Industrial output fell 0.2% in September, completing the fifth straight quarter of contraction (Graph 1). The decline observed in the third quarter was smaller than in the second (-0.2% versus -1.9%), which will lead to better GDP performance in the third quarter than in the second (-0.6%). All the same, the latest figures strengthen the evidence of very weak GDP performance in the third quarter.
