A climate of dialogue and cooperation among the main political forces in March allowed the harnessing of support from a large majority of the population, to implement lockdowns that helped dampen the pace of infections and deaths. This early action allowed time to reinforce the health care system, and to avoid a collapse of the intensive care units. But after six months of strict lockdowns, the number of coronavirus infections and deaths continues to increase rapidly; cases are now spreading outside of Greater Buenos Aires, in spite of many cross-border controls, and severe restrictions on public and private transport.
