Today, the opposition defeated the PLD by a wide margin in national elections and there will be no need for a second electoral round. Partial but irreversible results indicate that Luis Abinader (PRM and allies), obtained about 54% of the votes, while Castillo (PLD and allies) managed only 35%. Former President Leonel Fernández (FP and allies) obtained about 9% of the votes. Estimates indicate that the PLD also lost Congress as it was defeated in most of the country's 32 provinces. They will end as a minority in both houses, but it is not clear if the PRM will reach majority since FP and allies grabbed some seats. The PLD had been in power for 16 consecutive years and in recent years had achieved full control of the branches of the State (the Executive, Congress, and the judiciary). Today's results are a serious setback for the PLD and for President Medina. Many in the country are relieved that the electoral process is over because it allows for a less abrupt and difficult transition than if there had been a second round of elections and allows both the outgoing and incoming governments to focus on continuing to confront the serious health and economic crisis that the country is facing.
