Ahead of Sunday’s runoff vote, Massa slightly edges Milei in the final presidential debate
As usually happens in runoff elections, particularly between those representing “extreme” political viewpoints, candidates generally seek to attract the undecided median voter. Sergio Massa, the candidate representing the current government, attempted to blast the libertarian independent Javier Milei as too far right to represent the best interests of Argentina. For his part, Milei attempted to paint Massa as the poster boy of the policies of Argentina’s current economic plight. Of course, each candidate attempted to portray his own proposed policy proposals as mainstream politics and the opponent's as extreme.
Although in this final debate, the rules allowed much more cross-examination between the candidates than in the first two, there was no clear-cut winner of the debate. Massa did demonstrate his far greater experience and political savvy, while Milei pushed himself as the candidate for change.
Although Massa appeared to dominate most of the first half of the debate, the second half of the debate was a much more balanced competition between the two.
We continue to believe that the coin is still up in the air between the two candidates.
