The Erdogan-Bahceli regime launched a new crackdown, which spares no victims. These range from the CEO of a casting agency to party leaders. The politics author fails to find an overarching theme that ties the victims together, but if silencing every voice that opposes it will be the modus operandi or is the purpose here, it is self-defeating, he believes, because Erdogan will need the very opposition actors, whom he antagonizes, to regain eligibility.

CHP Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu is the most important figure to be haunted, being charged with two new “crimes”, certain to lead to more indictments. Turkish experts are now in full agreement that Erdogan intends to sideline him. Yet, a very large crowd, which congregated around the Istanbul Judicial Palace, where Imamoglu was questioned, suggests he may have another Gezi on his hand, if his main rival is banned from politics.
