Politics: AMLO, 4T and the economy score high in poll, despite discontent over security

MEXICO - Report 04 Apr 2023 by Guillermo Valdés and Francisco González

President López Obrador’s approval rating jumped to its highest since late 2020, perceptions of whether the country is on the right track were at their strongest since 2019, and support for prolonging AMLO’s governing project into the next presidential administration approached 50%, as did support for his Morena party in the latest GEA-ISA quarterly survey of registered voters. The strong surge in support for the administration can be traced in part to increased efforts by officials to draw a direct line between popular cash transfer programs and the Morena party, as well as the extent to which the economy has rebounded since the pandemic.

In the case of how families perceive their own economic situation, more than half said it was good.

But the poll also showed that there are two areas about which society maintains very critical views: corruption and public safety. Perceptions of whether corruption is more extensive than six years ago were the highest since AMLO took office, and those of insecurity also spiked dramatically, with 61% calling for a break from AMLO’s current security policy. Seven out of ten Mexicans responded that on AMLO's watch, criminal organizations have grown and become more violent, and 45% say security conditions in their communities have worsened over the past six months.
