Politics: AMLO’s extended verbal onslaught against the Judiciary takes the form of budget cuts, cancelling trusts and the threat of a major constitutional reform
Last week, Congress approved the administration’s proposal to cancel 13 out of 14 of the trusts of the Federal Judiciary, just the latest episode in the extended history of President López Obrador's offensive against this branch. However, the executive’s attacks on the judiciary have intensified since Norma Piña was elected chief justice of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation and head of the entire judiciary.
Since that time the Judiciary, and more specifically the Supreme Court, has emerged as the main counterweight to President López Obrador, at long last taking up legal appeals against government decisions and policies and against unconstitutional reforms. In response, the administration has launched an onslaught on multiple fronts against the Judicial Power. This week we analyze those efforts and the odds that AMLO might succeed in those endeavors.
