Another failed attempt to arrest ‘big fish’

Last Thursday, on April 20th National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) put under detention another well-known rent-seeker Mykola Martynenko. Martynenko is the purse of ‘People’s front’ party led by ex-prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk. He was arrested under suspicion of abusing $17.28 million of funds of state-owned ‘Eastern mining &processing enterprise’ (mining and processing of uranium ore). Previously, journalists often mentioned name of Mykola Martynenko when investigating corrupt schemes related to state-owned enterprises. Unlike, former Head of State fiscal service Roman Nasirov, Martynenko enjoyed vast support of his comrades from ‘People’s front’ party who came to the court and requested to release Martynenko on bail. Among influential people who publicly supported Martynenko we can mention Minister of infrastructure Volodymyr Omelyan, and Minister of education Lidiya Hrynevych who used to be seen as honest politicians. Yesterday, on April 22nd, the court released Mykola Martynenko from detention under guarantees of 3 ministers, 17 MPs and one member of central election commission. In fact it was a real shock for many civil society representatives to see reputable people standing for Martynenko. There were no illusions about the court being friendly to such influential person as Martynenko releasing him under some financial guarantee. However, the story with seemingly honest people defending a corrupt person is something new even for Ukraine. The main conclusion from this attempt to put Martynenko into jail is that NABU indeed is trying to do its work properly.
