Another week of solid data, rising tensions

Domestic political tensions continue to rise. A new lawsuit has been launched against the Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, while an investigation on bribery in CHP’s last grand convention could lead to the party being managed by a government-appointed trustee for a year or two. The politics author hopes President Erdogan’s meddling with the inner workings of CHP doesn’t go that far, but if it were to happen, his “early elections by March 2026” scenario will need to be reconsidered.

Out of nowhere, Turkey’s big-business association TUSIAD decided to unfurl the flag of rebellion against AKP, with AKP immediately retaliating by investigating one of its leading members. TUSIAD might be alarmed by a new piece of legislation granting Turkish SDIF the right to appoint trustees to private sector firms for a wide range of alleged offenses, which would affect its members. How will the struggle end?
