Argentina’s political and economic landscape in the days before the primaries
After becoming the pre-candidate of the government for the presidency, Minister of the Economy Sergio Massa concentrated his efforts on avoiding entering into arrears with the IMF. He did this despite the rhetoric in favor of disengaging from the supervision of that institution by the Kirchnerist bloc of “Unión por la Patria", the new name of the coalition created by Cristina Kirchner in 2019. Sergio Massa and his associates considered that without the support of the IMF, there would be a run against the peso that would end in an inflationary explosion before the presidential election in November. That would eliminate Massa's chances of winning the election and destroy his political career.
The political, economic, and social developments from now until the first year of the next government are extremely uncertain. Hopefully, the outcome of the primary elections on August 13 will reduce the uncertainty.
