Armenia and Azerbaijan fire on each other

On May 11 shots across the border led to one dead and four wounded. The two neighbors held talks in Washington DC just last week. The US and Russia called for calm in the former Soviet states. The US suggested that both sides withdraw forces an agreed number of km from the frontline. The EU is due to broker peace talks between the two starting on May 15. Armenia's Prime Minister and Azerbaijan's President were due to meet in Brussels. Neither country is an EU member or seeking candidacy. Armenia said its PM is still going to Brussels despite the fighting but said an agreement is improbable. On June 1 the leaders of the two countries are due to meet with their French and German counterparts in Moldova. It is notable that the EU is so involved in trying to build peace. It is bad news for Moscow that the EU and US are so involved in peacemaking in the Caucasus. Russia views the former USSR as its patch. Armenia accused Azerbaijan of opening up artillery fire. Azerbaijan said their enemy had provoked them and used heavy weapons. The Armenian PM went to Moscow for Victory Day on May 9. That is despite Armenia's being openly exasperated at the lack of support from Russia. Russia needs all its weapons for the war and has little time or political capital to devote to Armenia. Russia does not wish to irritate Azerbaijan because it is stronger than Armenia and it is an ally of Turkey.
