Armenia and Azerbaijan negotiate in Brussels

On August 24 representatives of the two hostile countries met under the auspices of the EU. In August 2022 there was sniping across the ceasefire line between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Armenia accused the other side of being the aggressor. The EU's statement about the talks was notable for its non-specificity. Armenia and Azerbaijan have been very cagey about the talks. This implies that says they did not go well. Attempts to agree a permanent peace after the 2020 war have foundered. The EU is keen to ensure peace in the region. That is partly because Georgia, which negotiates with the warring countries, is an EU candidate member. The EU would like to diminish Russian sway in the region. Armenia is a military ally of Russia, and Azerbaijan is a vital source of energy for the EU.
