On October 4 the Armenian controlled city of Stepankert was hit by rockets and artillery. The Armenians retaliated with artillery fire and rockets on Ganja which is Azerbaijan's second city. This is a serious escalation of the conflict over the disputed Nagorno Karabakh Region. Both nations have rebuffed calls by the Minsk Group for a cessation of hostilities and talks. Turkey is Azerbaijan's brother nation. The Turks have been exceptionally fulsome in their support this time. Turkish officers are said to be in Azerbaijan advising their Azerbaijani comrades. Yerevan said a Turkish F-16 shot down an Armenian plane. The Turks denied this. Notably, Azerbaijan does not have any F-16s. Armenia accused Azerbaijan of bringing 300 Syrian rebels to assist them. Moscow now supports this claim. This is a sign of how Moscow-Baku relations have soured. Over 200 people have been killed since fighting erupted on September 26. Take into account that figure excludes Azerbaijani soldiers since their government has not admitted to any military fatalities.
