Armenia benefits from Russian businesses relocating there

Stringent Western sanctions are causing Russian businesses to move to the Caucasian former Soviet republic. Most people in Armenia can speak fluent Russian and the country is very friendly with Moscow. Russians have visa free entry to Armenia. Armenia is also a transit country for flying to the EU as direct flights are banned. Turkey and Serbia are also transit countries for Russians. Russians are flying to the West are sometimes stopped and questioned about their patriotism in Russian airports.Copywriters, IT specialists, accountants and other location independent professionals have moved to Armenia. The cost of living is much lower in Armenia than in Russia. Armenia has only 3 million people but over 2 million people in Russia are of at least part Armenian descent. Yerevan's loyalty to Russia is because the country is so reliant on Russia economically. Armenia is a military ally of Russia and has 2 000 Russian peacekeepers along its border with Azerbaijan. However, Armenia has not sent troops to fight for Russia in Ukraine. Yerevan does not want to upset the West too much. The Prime Minister said the conflict is a tragedy and hopes for peace. On February 25 the Council of Europe suspended Russia. Armenia was the only country out of 41 to support Russia in that vote.Flights from Moscow to Yerevan are full for the next week. This is highly unusual for the time of year.Georgia is another popular destination for Russians. It tends to attract more liberal Russians. Georgia has a fractious relationship with Russia owning to a border dispute. Georgia is seeking EU and NATO membership.
