Armenia declines to host CSTO military drills

On January 10 Armenia announced that it will not host the military drills of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). The CSTO includes Russia and 5 other nations. Prime Minister Pashinyan of Armenia publicly criticized Russia for not being more helpful to Armenia while Azerbaijani demonstrators are blocking a road that connects Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia. Azerbaijan is not a member of the CSTO. Armenia is disappointed by the lack of Russian support. Russia notes that Nagorno-Karabakh is legally part of Azerbaijan so Russia will not help Armenia with that region. Russia cannot afford to irk Azerbaijan, which is neutral in the Ukraine War. More important is Azerbaijan's ally and brother nation: Turkey, which is in NATO. Turkey is the only NATO country not to sanction Russia. Pashinyan came to office in 2018 saying he would reduce dependence on Russia. But Armenia has no alternative. NATO countries do not dare irritate Turkey by backing Armenia. Pashinyan called for an international peacekeeping force to come to Nagorno-Karabakh. On January 10 Putin's spokesman reaffirmed that Armenia is a close ally.
