Armenia hands over villages to Azerbaijan

On April 19 Armenia ceded the land to its neighbor as part of a border demarcation agreement. The four villages were part of Azerbaijan in the Soviet era. This has caused protests in Armenia, where some people believe the government is being feeble and cowardly. Some say Prime Minister Pashinyan is betraying his country. Armenians in nearby villages said that handing over this land means that roads they need to use are now Azerbaijani controlled. The US and European Union are happy about the agreement, which they believe will restore peace to the region. Azerbaijani and Armenian ministers hold regular private meetings. Since 2020 Azerbaijan has gained more and more land. Some Armenians are worried because their country is already small and has hostile states to its east and to its west: Azerbaijan and Turkey. Relations with Russia are at an all time low. If Azerbaijan chooses to break the peace agreement, then Armenia could even be overrun. Russia does not have the forces or the inclination to save Armenia.
