Armenia probes Gazprom

The Armenian Government has launched a probe into Gazprom Armenia. It is alleged that there has been corruption and tax evasion. The two offences are widespread in Armenia. Gazprom Armenia is affiliated to the Russian semi state gas giant. The sum involved in the alleged corruption and tax evasion case is over USD 14 million. Gazprom is one of the largest taxpayers in Armenia. Why would Armenia go after Gazprom? The law may be being applied selectively. It would seem unwise of Yerevan to offend Moscow. Washington DC is twisting Armenia's arm into buying less energy from Iran, which borders Armenia. Russia is the country's other main energy supplier. The investigation of Gazprom may be intended to induce the company to drop its prices.
