Armenia rocked by protests against ceding land to Azerbaijan

On May 11 peace talks between the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia ended in Kazakhstan. The talks did not result in a treaty and both parties say they have not agreed on certain points.In Armenia there have been large scale demonstrations against handing over territory to Azerbaijan. Tens of thousands of people were on the streets. This is considerable in a country of 3 million. This is pursuant to an agreement signed between the countries in April 2024. The US and EU were in favor of this agreement. Armenia gave back 4 villages it held since the war in the early 1990s. An Armenian archbishop has been prominent in leading the protests. Many called for the Prime Minister to resign. There has been significant civil disobedience. In May 2024 Armenia stopped paying its dues to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). This is a Russian led military alliance of 6 former USSR countries. Armenia has openly considered leaving the CSTO.
