Armenian and Azerbaijani skirmish leaves 5 dead

On March 5 men were shot dead in Nagorno Karabakh - a region of Azerbaijan that is controlled by Armenia. Armenia claimed some of its police officers were ambushed by the Azerbaijani Army. Azerbaijan confirmed the shooting incident but said that its soldiers were killed when they attempted to prevent Armenians illegally bringing in weapons. The 2020 conflict over Nagorno Karabakh ended in an uneasy peace treaty. But there has been constant skirmishing since. Since December 2022 Azerbaijani activists have blocked the only road that connects Nagorno Karabakh to Armenia. The Armenian residents of Nagorno Karabakh are desperately short of comestibles and medicines. Azerbaijani says that environmental activists have blocked the road and not the Azerbaijani state. Armenia says this is a lie and that the men blocking the road are Azerbaijani soldiers in civilian clothes. Nagorno Karabakh authorities say that they are willing to agree to customs controls to ensure that they are not bringing in weapons but that they will only agree to Russian peacekeepers inspecting goods. The Red Cross and Russian peacekeepers have been allowed into Nagorno Karabakh.
