Armenian Army denounces the prime minister

On February 24 the army issued a statement expressing its lack of confidence in Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyam. The generals said that he was ''incapable of making adequate decisions.'' Pashinyan brought 20 000 admirers onto the streets in a show of force. Pahinyan said that the army top brass' statement was an attempted coup. The army has not tried to physically oust him. The PM fired the chief of defense staff in response to the statement.Pashinyan has offered to open negotiations with the opposition. Since the November 2020 defeat by Azerbaijan there have been incessant protests against the PM. People have demanded his resignation. The opposition said if he did not stand down there might be civil war.Pashinyan said that the Iskander missiles bought from Russia missed their targets in the war. The deputy chief of defense staff dismissed that claim. The PM fired him for that. There have been continuous protests calling for Pashinyan to stand down as PM. President Sarkisian asked for all parties to negotiate in good faith. The president is a figurehead. Russia has appealed for tranquility.
