Armenian opposition accused of coup plot

On November 14 the leader of the Homeland Party was arrested on suspicion of plotting to assassinate the prime minister. Artur Vanetsian excoriated Pashinyan over losing the war against Azerbaijan. Vanetsian was once head of the National Security Service (NSS) which is the country's equivalent of the CIA. He may retain the loyalty of some in the NSS. Vanetsian was appointed head of the NSS by Pashinyan and the two men were close but fell out in 2019. The Homeland Party said Pashinyan was a traitor for agreeing the shameful peace.The November 10 ceasefire was very disadvantageous to Armenia. The country was being thrashed. Irate crowds occupied parliament. In 1999 another prime minister was assassinated because because of a putative deal with Azerbaijan. 10 opposition politicians have been arrested and charged with orchestrating unrest. Vanetsian has denied the accusation.
