Armenian opposition leader arrested as the country clashes with Azerbaijan

On September 26 Armenia and Azerbaijan exchanged fire across the ceasefire in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh Region. The Azeris used many drones. Turkey has offered vocal support even more strident than usual. Both sides acknowledged sustaining deaths. On September 26 Gagik Tsarukyan was given two months pre-trial detention. He has been charged with financial offenses including vote buying. He has been charged with an illegal gambling ring which deprived the state of USD 60 million in revenue. Tsarukyan is leader of the country's main opposition party 'Prosperous Armenia' and he is a successful businessman. Members of Parliament usually have immunity from prosecution. His was removed in June 2020.Tsarukyan went to the national security building to allow himself to be arrested. He said that the charges were politically motivated. Prime Minister Pashinyan is a bitter for of Tsarukyan. Pashinyan has launched an anti-corruption drive. He initially had some Prosperous Armenia MPs in his cabinet. They have since been fired. Prosperous Armenia, the Homeland Party and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation plan a protest for October 8. Tsarukyan owns hotels, casinos, shopping malls and furniture factories. He said that the government has failed to tackle coronavirus. The economic situation has hit Tsarukyan's businesses hard. The economy is due to contract 6.2% in 2020.
