Armenians fleeing Nagorno Karabakh

On September 26 thousands of Armenian civilians left Nagorno Karabakh. The region is legally Azerbaijani but has a huge Armenian majority. Its population is 120,000. It is estimated that 13,000 have fled since September 22. The Prime Minister of Armenia said ethnic cleansing is being committed in the region. Armenian leaders in the region say 99% of the Armenians there will leave. Azerbaijan has said the Armenians in Nagorno Karabakh are Azerbaijani citizens and shall be treated equally. Azerbaijan has allowed one convoy of 70 tonnes of aid through to Nagorno Karabakh since the September 21 ceasefire. But there are fears that they will not allow any more.  In the 1990s a war over Nagorno Karabakh resulted in an Armenian victory. There were several large scale massacres of civilians on both sides. On September 26 a fuel depot in Nagorno Karabakh exploded, injuring 200 people. It is unclear if this was an accident. Armenia is struggling to cope with the influx of refugees. It has 3 million people, and tens of thousands of Russians fleeing mobilization came to the country in 2022.  There are protests in Yerevan against Prime Minister Pashinyan. They accuse him of cowardice and incompetence—of effectively handing Nagorno Karabakh to Azerbaijan.
