Arrests for fraud in the Russian Army

On August 2 Sergei Sukhov, the former head of construction for the Central Military district, was taken into custody. Sukhov was a subordinate of the former Deputy Defense Minister Ivanov who is also in custody. There have already been arrests as part of the investigation. The organization being investigated is the Military Construction Complex. It builds barracks and technical structures for the Ministry of Defense. The loss to the state from fraud is thought to be over USD 5 million. The need for military construction has increased dramatically since 2022. The projects in which fraud allegedly took place include fortifications and a naval school, as well as a history park in Crimea. The arrests might really be related to a fraud investigation. However, it is also possible that is more of a power struggle within the Ministry of Defense and/or a means of punishing incompetence.
