The summer should have been a perfect opportunity for President Erdogan --and his AKP-MHP or the Republic Alliance-- to recover some lost ground in the polls. However, clumsy governance, detachment from voter concerns, and a string of natural disasters prevented the rebound.
As the summer ends, a majority of citizens feel worse off, which is reflected in declining support ratings of Erdogan and his alliance.
Meanwhile, the President initiated two major policy changes. The first concerns refugees; after years of open-door policy, Ankara’s new mantra is “no more!”. Turkey also took another step towards normalizing its ties with the UAE and Egypt.
