Azerbaijan assists Turkmenistan's TAPI pipeline

Last week President Aliyev of Azerbaijan visited Turkmenistan. Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan share a maritime border in the Caspian Sea. This is the first state visit by the Azerbaijani president to Turkmenistan. The two countries did only USD 164 million of trade last year. The visa regime between the two is about to be eased. The warming of relations between the two is significant. They have not always seen eye to eye about oil in the Caspian. Pipes for Turkmenistan's TAPI pipeline are being delivered through Azerbaijan. They cost USD 40 million and were funded by Saudi Arabia.The TAPI pipeline is being built from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. This will give Turkmenistan another route to export its gas. The pipeline will cost USD 8 to 10 billion. The Afghan section of the pipeline is under construction. The Pakistani section is supposed to begin construction in December 2018. When complete 33 billion cubic meters of gas per year will flow through the pipeline. Turkmengas State Concern owns 85% with Pakistan, Afghanistan and India owning the rest in equal shares.
