Azerbaijan expels 4 Iranian diplomats amid assassination claims

On April 6 Azerbaijan made the move. It has accused the diplomats of spying and gave them 48 hours to leave. Azerbaijan arrested 6 of its own citizens that day and said that they had conspired to overthrow the government and establish a theocracy. Iran is a shariat state whereas Azerbaijan is secular. The two are neighbors and despite both being mostly Shia Muslim they have difficult relations. Two-thirds of historic Azerbaijan is in Iran, and this is another bone of contention. Israel has cordial relations with Azerbaijan. On the other hand Iran is a deadly enemy of Iran. Iran has friendly relations with Azerbaijan's foe: Armenia. Baku has been worried by Iran's very collaborative relationship with Russia. Azerbaijan has given non-lethal aid to Ukraine. In January 2023 the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran was subjected to a gun attack and one security guard was killed.Â
