On February 16 President Aliyev reaffirmed Ali Asadov's prime ministership. The Majilis (parliament) voted its approval of the nomination. Asadov has held this office since 2019. He is a member of the New Azerbaijan like Aliyev. He is 67 and does not overshadow the president in any way. Aliyev has just begun a record-breaking 5th term as president after an election that was widely denounced as a charade. He has the power to appoint and dismiss ministers other than the PM without the need for parliamentary approval. It seems there is no reason to expect significant changes in the near future. From Aliyev's point of view everything is satisfactory. Cuts to infrastructure spending in 2023 did not cause major disquiet.
