Azerbaijan starts LNG supplies to EU

On December 31 Azeri gas was sent via the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) for the first time. The EU is keen to reduce energy dependence on Russia. TAP is 878 km long and is part of the Southern Gas Corridor.Shah Deniz 2 field in the Caspian is the main source of the gas. Italy, Greece and Bulgaria are the major customers. The has travels 3 500 km via Georgia and Turkey to the westernmost reaches of the EU.Baku's ambition is to sell 10 billion cubic meters of gas to the EU's gas. That is modest and not too difficult to achieve. Russia is the largest supplier of gas to the EU selling 33% of all the gas bought by the EU. That will probably not change. Indeed Russia aims to increase gas exports to the EU from 170 bcm to 183 bcm per annum. On December 31 the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) signed a deal to sell oil to Belarus. Russia will not like that.
