Azerbaijan takes land from Armenia

On August 26 the President of Azerbaijan said his army had taken Lachin which is a town connecting the Nagorno Karabakh Region to Armenia. The area had been under the control of 2 000 Russian peacekeepers since 2020 as part of a 5 km wide corridor. There is supposed to be a new route built by 2025 connecting Nagorno Karabakh to Armenia. Some Russian peacekeepers left the area on August 25. It is possible this is because Russia needs them in Ukraine. Armenia is a military ally of Russia. However, this alliance does not extend to Nagorno Karabakh which Russia recognizes as legally Azerbaijani. Baku knows that Russia cannot afford to help Armenia at the moment. Moreover, Moscow is disinclined to alienate Azerbaijan and its ally Turkey in the current delicate geopolitical situation. Azerbaijan took other villages earlier in August 2022. Azerbaijan said those who were there illegally (i.e. Armenian civilians) should depart. Some have done so. Azerbaijanis who fled the area in the 1990s are returning.
