Back in the twilight zone of Turkish politics
Turkish politics entered the Twilight Zone once again, where the unthinkable quickly becomes the norm. The politics essays start with reports of President Erdogan planning to send the military to Syria once again, to deal the final blow to the reigning Kurdish military-political entity PYD/YPG. While the military incursion would draw much criticism from the international community, it is extremely useful to Erdogan’s objectives.
The mood music about Trump changed quickly in Ankara, as some of his appointments to the cabinet turned out to have anti-Turkey CVs. Ankara is yet to comment about these appointments, and the politics author still thinks better relations are possible. Halkbank losing yet another appeal in the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals raises the specter of a guilty verdict on charges of violating Iran sanctions, which could draw devastating financial penalties. In other words, Ankara has pressing reasons to be on the good side of Trump and will probably be in the mood to horse-trade.
