Political upheaval in Turkey is in full swing, with strong indications that President Erdogan has not given up on his objective of appointing trustees to Istanbul Municipality and CHP. The surprise is MHP leader Bahceli’s public objections to Erdogan’s plans. In the past, such public rebukes by Bahceli were heeded by Erdogan, precipitating rather drastic changes of policy course. CHP leader Ozel matched Erdogan’s machinations step by step, and even invented new gimmicks to pile more pressure on him. The first ever march by CHP to defend the Palestinian cause was a masterpiece striking at the heart of Erdogan’s loyal constituency, but the politics author hasn’t changed his view that Ozel’s ability to keep the protests going over the summer months is yet to be proven.
