Bahceli shuts the door to AKP and CHP

In Turkey’s political pundit community I am be alone in relying almost exclusively on public statements by party authorities, while others prefer divining ulterior motives and listening to Ankara rumors. According to my unique method, early elections suddenly came to outrank both AKP and CHP led coalition possibilities after MHP leader Bahceli called CHP’s proposal for three-partite “restoration government” “non-sense”. According to reliable daily newspaper Milliyet (linked here in Turkish) in an interview with a website, Mr. Devlet Bahceli shot down any possibility for an alliance that has HDP in it. He also specifically ruled out supporting a CHP minority government. He reiterated that to ally his party with AKP, the latter should make a solemn promise to shelve the Kurdish Peace Process and ask President Erdogan to withdraw to the limits of symbolic presidency. Why is he so stubborn? Bahceli may be motivated by the observation that both a coalition with AKP or support for any enterprise with HDP may cause him to lose votes in the next elections. He may prefer to take his chances in early elections, to prove to his base that these will not change the outcome much and he will be forced to choose between one of the undesirable alternatives. Could the post-election ferment in AKP help Davutoglu rebel against Erdogan? No, not yet.
