Belarus calls for a truce in Ukraine

On March 31 the President Lukasheno called on the warring parties to call a truce without any preconditions. He warned of the risk of escalation. Lukashenko said that the issues ought to be agreed through talks. He said that Western arms shipments were raising the chance of a nuclear war. As Belarus is so dependent on Russia there is a chance that Lukashenko is saying this because Putin asked him to. The war is not progressing well for Russia, so a truce might be welcomed by Russia. There appears to be a twin track policy: scaring the West with nuclear rhetoric while also offering de-escalation. In March 2023 Russia placed nuclear arms in Belarus. Belarus said it was obliged to host the nuclear arms because of the level of Western pressure on Belarus.
