Belarus convenes a People's Assembly

On February 11 Lukashenka declared that a People's Assembly shall be summoned. Its task will be to discuss development until 2026 and to propose constitutional amendments. The Assembly is effectively composed of people selected for their loyalty to the president. Lukashanka called the protests against him a "blitzkrieg". He was likening the protests to Germany's 1941 invasion.Oppositionists panned the Assembly as a charade to divert attention from the president's profound illegitimacy. The US estimates that Belarus holds 30,000 politicial prisoners.
