Belarus' president in China

On December 4 Lukashenko arrived in Beijing and met with President Xi. China is one of the very few countries willing to receive him since the disputed 2020 election. Lukashenko likes to prove that he has friends who are not just in Russia. This is the second time Xi has met Lukashenko this year and the third time in total.  The two discussed the Belt and Road Initiative. Belarus really wants to boost trade with China because Western sanctions have hit Belarus's economy badly since 2020. Sanctions were tightened in 2022 because Belarus allowed Russian forces stationed on its soil to attack Ukraine.
