Belarus protests lead to one death

On August 9 and 10 illegal protests took place on the streets of Minsk. The protesters did not accept the outcome of the presidential election. The police were trying to suppress the demonstrations. Protests turned into riots with people stoning the police. Some built makeshift barricades.Over 3 000 protesters and rioters were arrested. There were demonstrations in minor cities as well as Minsk. Police have used rubber bullets and tear gas. Svytlana Tsikhanouskaya came second in the election. She has gone to Lithuania for her own safety. She did not take part in protests but said that power should be ceded to her as the rightful president. She lodged a formal complaint to the election commission about the lack of election observers and the large scale instance of fraud. Officially she won 10% of the vote. In a sign of thaw Putin congratulated Lukashenka on his win. So did the Chinese. There is little chance that Lukashenka will be forced out.
