Belarus strengthens borders

On September 17 Lukashenka announced that borders with Poland, Lithuania and Latvia would be closed because of interference with Belarus' affairs. In fact this has not happened. However, the border has been strengthened. It is rumored that Lukashenka's favorite son Nikolai, 16, has been sent to school in Moscow. The USD 1.5 billion loan Russian announced recently will mostly be used to repay loans Belarus already owes to Russia. Belarus is bracing itself for hardship due to sanctions and a brain drain. On September 17 over 1 000 Jewish pilgrims were stranded on the Belarus-Ukraine border. They were trying to get to Uman, Ukraine because a renowned sage is buried there. Belarus has no coronavirus restrictions but Ukraine has closed the borders because of it. The pilgrims pleaded to be allowed in but Zelensky refused. The Belarussians have been helpful to the Israelis. Lukashenka has few friends and wants to curry favor with Israel.
