Biden approves USD 300 million in military aid for Ukraine

On March 12 the US President said this is needed to keep Ukraine in the fight. The money given is what the US military has saved on recent purchases. Therefore, the President has the authority to spend it. Usually Congress and not the president has the power of the purse. Most of the aid will be shells, anti-tank weapons, anti-aircraft weapons, HIMARS rockets and small arms ammunition. It is recognized that this aid package is a stop gap. There is a worry in ANTO and EU countries that if Ukraine does not get significant aid in the next few months then Ukraine could be forced to make major concessions to Russia. The CIA Director warned that Ukraine is desperately short of ammunition and the US needs to help them before it is too late. A US intelligence assessment noticed that Russia is gaining an ever greater advantage on the battlefield. A military aid package of USD 60 billion for Ukraine has been stuck in the US Congress since December 2023. There is no sign it will be passed soon. It might never be passed. Even if it is passed the package will probably end up being significantly smaller than USD 60 billion. The Polish President and Prime Minister are visiting Washington DC to express their concern about that they perceive as the menace of Russia. On March 2 the US approved a USD 3.5 billion missile sale to Poland. Poland has hugely increased its military budget since 2022. It urged NATO members to spend 3% of GDP on defense and not 2% that is supposed to be the NATO standard but some countries do not even reach. There is rising anxiety in NATO countries at how much Russia has ramped up military manufacturing.
