Biden assures Ukraine of unstinting support

On January 2 the US President spoke to his Ukrainian counterpart by phone. Biden said that the United States will react strongly if there is a Russian invasion. He repeated that the US supports Ukrainian independence and territorial integrity. Biden reminded Zelensky that the Minsk Agreement must be implemented via the Normandy format.The White House said it will be using diplomacy through the NATO-Russian Council and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.President Zelensky said he is grateful for America's staunch support. He also said that he and his US analogue spoke about de-oligarchization and other reforms. The US has been repeatedly frustrated that money it has given to Ukraine has disappeared through corruption and defalcation. On January 3 the US, Russia, the UK, France and China affirmed that there will not be a nuclear conflict no matter what. The Ukrainians are worried that Russia will invade in January 2022. This is the second time Biden and Zelensky have discussed this.Adam Schiff, chair of the US House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, said that Russia must be threatened with unprecedented sanctions if it is to be dissuaded from invading Ukraine. Schiff added that Moscow must be made to understand that if it invades Ukraine this will bring NATO closer to Russia. Schiff propagated the "Russia-gate" theory of Trump's election and is perceived by Moscow as an inveterate russophobe. Putin has warned Biden that further sanctions on Russia would be an enormous mistake. But Putin has not said what he would do in response.
