Biden repeats support for Ukraine over war fears

The US President spoke to the Ukrainian President on February 13 for an hour. Both leaders agreed to the twin-track approach to avert war: diplomacy and deterrence. The US reiterated that it recognizes Crimea, Donbas and Luhansk as legally Ukrainian. Biden underscored that if there is a Russian invasion, then the US will instantly respond with ruinous sanctions. Biden also spoke to Putin on February 12. The White House did not reveal the particulars but indicated that the outcome of the phone call was not encouraging. On February 13 the US National Security Advisor said that a Russian invasion could begin very soon. It shows how urgent he thinks the situation is that he made such an announcement on a Sunday.
