Big battles ahead, as economy hangs on foreign support
Since mid-December, most media attention has been focused on two small towns in Eastern Ukraine — Bakhmut and Soledar. The Russians have been intensively burning through their manpower in frontal attacks on both. By mid-January, Soledar had been captured by Russian forces, but in light of Russia’s huge losses, it was a Pyrrhic victory of mostly just propaganda value for Yevgeni Prigozhin and his Wagner forces.
Meanwhile, there are many signs of a new counteroffensive operation by Ukrainian forces. Intensified talks about offensive weapons and hefty supplies of armored vehicles and tanks clearly indicate that major battles loom in the not-too-distant future. The direction of a potential counteroffensive is fairly predictable, and Ukraine’s forces will need a considerable quantity of heavy offensive weaponry to succeed in breaking the frontline.
