Bolsonarismo’s new narrative

The use of hydroxychloroquine in people infected with coronavirus is the new bet of President Jair Bolsonaro to try to take back the initiative in the political debate. According to the president, doctors have been using the medicine for almost two months in Brazil. Yet, although there are promising reports from some doctors regarding the use of the drug in patients who have contracted Covid-19 and are in serious condition, an important part of the medical community maintains that it is too early to scientifically guarantee that hydroxychloroquine is the solution to the coronavirus.

In parallel to the medical debate, the hydroxychloroquine topic has become a political dispute. As the remedy has been advocated by Bolsonaro for a few months, his supporters have launched an offensive in favor of the medication on social media. From the point of view of the narrative, Bolsonarismo has been successful in recent days. According to a survey conducted by Bites, the debate over hydroxychloroquine has established a momentary advantage for President Jair Bolsonaro on social media.
